Spiders

Florida Spider Types

Some Spiders

While they do not spread disease and will eat other harmful pests, spiders are considered a nuisance pest in homes and businesses. People’s dislike for spiders can range from general annoyance, to an irrational psychological fear, called arachnophobia. Spider webs can also create problems in residential and commercial settings. Spider webs are often considered unsightly and give visitors an impression that a space is not clean or inviting. Most spiders are nocturnal, shy, and avoid conflict by running away. They will only bite if they feel threatened (for example, being squeezed or held).

House Spiders

The house spider is colored white to brown with dark markings and its spherical body is approximately three-eighths of an inch long.Male legs are orange and female legs are yellow. This species is known to be aggressive, but avoids human contact. They can bite, causing slow-healing open wounds, but bites from these spiders are rare.

House spiders are found all over the world in corners, crawlspaces, basements, under furniture and near windows and anywhere insects might be caught.

Brown Recluse Spiders

These light to dark brown spiders have a characteristic dark brown violin marking on their backs and are generaly about 5/8" with a round body. Brown recluse spiders are nocturnal and eat other bugs like cockroaches and crickets. Male brown recluse spiders wander farther than females and will crawl into shoes or other clothing. These spiders often live outdoors in debris and wood piles, but hey can be found indoors in storage areas and dark recesses.

Like the black widow spider, the brown recluse spider bites in defense and does not bite humans instinctively. They will bite humans when the clothing they are hiding in is worn. The bite is painful and can produce an open, ulcerating sore.

It is the most common and widespread of the brown spiders, but it is found only in the south and central United States. It is unlikely your home is infected with this pest.

Black Widow Spiders

Black widow spiders are most recognized for the red hourglass shape on the back. Contrary to legend, female black widow spiders rarely devour the male black widow spider after mating. Their round bodies can be 3/4" in length and 3/8" in diameter.

Black widow spiders are often found around wood piles and gain entry into a structure when firewood is carried into a building. They are also found under eaves, in boxes, and other areas where they are undisturbed

The venom of a black widow spider is a neurotoxin and is used as a defense. Black widow spiders do not bite humans instinctively. They usually avoid human contact if possible. The black widow spider bite can cause severe pain. Young children and the elderly are especially susceptible to a severe reaction to a black widow spider bite. The female bite should be considered a medical emergency, as it can result in serious health complications.
